The African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights

The African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (ACHPR) is a quasi-judicial body tasked with promoting and protecting human rights throughout the African continent as well as interpreting the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights and considering individual complaints of violations of the Charter.

African Union

The African Union (AU) is a continental body consisting of the 55 member states that make up the countries of the African Continent. It was officially launched in 2002 as a successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU, 1963-1999) through the OAU Coordinating Committee for the Liberation of Africa.

Human Rights and National Human Rights Institutions On December 10, 1948, the UN General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. For the first time in history, it was officially and globally stated that all human beings have the same fundamental rights, irrespective of race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinions, national or social origin, property, birth, or other status.

International Criminal Court

The ICC is an intergovernmental organization and international tribunal that sits in The Hague, Netherlands. The ICC is the first and only permanent international court with jurisdiction to prosecute individuals for the international crimes of genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and the crime of aggression.

The Ombudsman serves as a safety net, an early warning system, and a catalyst for change. It ensures that no unfair practices hide in the shadows as the office monitors the progress of every complaint initiated by the complainant. The Ombudsman also ensures administrative justice and observance of human rights by responding to complaints that public authorities have not acted lawfully, fairly, and reasonably.

United Nations

The United Nations (UN) is an intergovernmental organization whose aim is to maintain international peace and security, develop friendly relations among nations, achieve international cooperation, and become a centre for harmonizing the actions of nations (Nations, Charter of the United Nations, n.d.) It is the largest, most familiar, most internationally represented, and most powerful intergovernmental organization in the world.
