A HUMAN RIGHTS ASSESMENT OF THE 2023 NATIONAL ELECTIONS

HURIDAC in collaboration with CISLAC unveiled a report on the human rights perspective of the 2023 presidential election at its office in Lagos State.

There were 216 instances of violence and abuses of human rights reported in the 2023 National Elections report. 187 of those cases involved unlawful killings, while 21 involved injuries and the destruction of eight or more houses.

This report serves two purposes: To standardize political rights in the area, particularly the right to vote, it is important to first evaluate recent elections in Nigeria and highlight the difficulties so far from a human rights perspective. Secondly, this analysis will serve as a reference for future elections in Nigeria that will also take human rights concerns into account.

In addition to providing a quick assessment of current political developments in Nigeria, the report also assesses elections that have demonstrated majority will in other West African nations like Sierra Leone, Liberia, and the Gambia.

It clarifies the function of civil society organizations (CSOs), national human rights organizations, electoral bodies, and regional organizations like ECOWAS in making sure that a nation’s elections are an accurate reflection of the political will of the populace.
